Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has secured a major transformer supply contract from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), strengthening its position in India’s expanding high-voltage transmission equipment market. The company has emerged as the successful bidder for a contract valued at approximately ₹514.56 crore to supply 23 units of 500 MVA, 765/400 kV single-phase transformers. The award relates to POWERGRID’s 765kV Transformer Package 7TR-21-BULK, part of its bulk procurement programme for high-voltage transformers and reactors.
The development comes as India continues to expand and reinforce its transmission infrastructure to accommodate growing electricity demand, renewable energy integration and the movement of power across regions. High-capacity transformers are a critical component of this network, enabling electricity to be stepped up or down between different voltage levels and supporting the reliable transfer of large volumes of power.

BHEL Takes 23-Transformer Package
Under the POWERGRID package, BHEL will supply 23 single-phase transformers rated at 500 MVA each, designed for 765/400 kV applications. The tender was originally published in March 2026 under specification number CC/NT/W-TR/DOM/A10/26/04369, with the package identified as 7TR-21-BULK. Tender records indicate that the procurement was conducted for the supply of 765kV and 400kV class transformers and reactors under Lot 7.
The procurement has a 30-month completion period, according to the tender documentation. The award activity was recorded on 24th August 2026, with BHEL listed as the successful bidder and the contract value reported at approximately ₹514.6 crores.
The order is significant not only because of its value but also because of the voltage class and scale of equipment involved. At 765 kV, the transformers form part of India’s highest-voltage transmission infrastructure, where equipment must meet demanding requirements for reliability, insulation performance, thermal management and long-term operation.

Transmission Expansion Creates Demand for High-Voltage Equipment
POWERGRID’s procurement is part of the broader expansion of India’s transmission network.
