Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has commenced work on an 800 MW renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh, marking another major step in the company’s expansion of clean-energy capacity. The project includes 400 MW of wind power and 400 MW of solar power. The wind component will be developed at Kanekallu in Ananthapuram, while the solar capacity will come up at Pattikonda in Kurnool district.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Shri Lokesh Nara, Minister for HRD, ITE&C and RTG, Government of Andhra Pradesh, who was the chief guest. Dr Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Power, was also present at the event. Other dignitaries at the ceremony included Shri T.G. Bharath, Minister for Industries & Commerce, Government of Andhra Pradesh and District In-charge Minister for Anantapur; Shri K.E. Shyam Kumar, MLA, Pattikonda; Shri Kalava Srinivasulu, MLA, Rayadurg Assembly Constituency; and Dr A. Siri, IAS, District Collector and Magistrate, Kurnool district.
For the wind component, TPREL will act as the project developer, while Suzlon will undertake the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) work at Ananthapuram. The solar component includes a 200 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project for NTPC. This part of the project will be supported by a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a storage capacity of 25 MW/50 MWh. Another 200 MW of solar capacity will be available for future allocation.

The project has secured 800 MW of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) connectivity through the Ananthapuram II and Kurnool-4 CTUIL substations. This connectivity is expected to facilitate the evacuation of electricity generated by the project through the national transmission network.
The development is being undertaken under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy, which aims to attract large-scale clean-energy investments, expand renewable power generation and encourage sustainable industrial development across the state. The project is expected to cover approximately 3,462 acres of land, with around 2,700 acres earmarked for the solar installation and 760 acres for the wind project.
Beyond adding renewable-energy capacity, the project is expected to generate annual lease rental income and create approximately 4,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities across its development, construction and operational stages. The project is therefore expected to contribute to both the region’s clean-energy infrastructure and its wider economic activity.
