Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi dedicated two renewable energy transmission projects of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) and laid the foundation stone for the Transmission System for Integration of Kurnool-IV Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) – Phase-I, reinforcing India’s efforts to strengthen renewable energy transmission infrastructure.
The projects are aimed at improving the evacuation and transmission of renewable power generated from Andhra Pradesh’s renewable energy zones while supporting the integration of clean energy into the National Grid.
Among the key developments, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for the Kurnool-IV Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) – Phase-I transmission system. The project, to be implemented by POWERGRID through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) involves an investment of around ₹5,550 crores and is designed to facilitate the integration of an additional 4.5 GW of renewable energy into the interstate transmission network.

Prime Minister had also dedicated the Transmission System for Kurnool Wind Energy Zone / Solar Energy Zone (Part A & Part B), developed at an investment of approximately ₹3,550 crores. In addition, he inaugurated the Transmission Scheme for Solar Energy Zones in Ananthapuram (2,500 MW) and Kurnool (1,000 MW), implemented by POWERGRID at a cost of over ₹820 crores.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, these transmission systems will enable the evacuation of renewable energy generated across the Kurnool and Ananthapuram renewable energy zones and facilitate its transmission to beneficiaries through the National Grid. The projects are also expected to improve the availability of clean electricity in demand centres while strengthening the country’s renewable energy transmission network.

The Kurnool-IV REZ Phase-I project is expected to add significant transmission capacity for integrating renewable power into the grid, supporting India’s growing clean energy ecosystem as renewable generation capacity continues to expand.
The transmission projects form part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s power infrastructure and support India’s transition towards cleaner sources of electricity. By enhancing the transmission network, the projects are expected to improve the integration of renewable energy, reduce transmission constraints, and contribute to the country’s long-term decarbonization objectives.

The projects also align with India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based installed power generation capacity by 2030, with transmission infrastructure playing a critical role in ensuring that renewable electricity generated in resource-rich regions can be delivered efficiently to consumers across the country.
