In a move aimed at promoting more energy-efficient electric vehicles, the Delhi government has proposed restricting EV purchase subsidies to electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers equipped with regenerative braking systems (RBS) under its upcoming Electric Vehicle Policy.
The new eligibility criteria are part of the government’s subsidy guidelines, which seek to encourage the adoption of advanced EV technologies while ensuring that public incentives are directed toward vehicles offering better efficiency and performance.

New Eligibility Criteria for EV Subsidies

- Mandatory regenerative braking system (RBS);
- Minimum certified range of 80 km on a single charge;
- Warranty of at least 3 years or 20,000 km;
- Maximum ex-showroom price of ₹2.25 lakhs.
Only models approved by the designated Model Approval Committee will be eligible for purchase incentives.

Proposed Subsidy Amounts
If implemented, eligible electric two-wheelers could receive:
- Up to ₹30,000 during the first year (₹10,000 per kWh of battery capacity)
- Up to ₹20,000 during the second year
- Up to ₹10,000 during the third year
Electric auto-rickshaws (L5M category) may receive:
- ₹50,000 in the first year
- ₹40,000 in the second year
- ₹30,000 in the third year
The subsidy structure is designed to encourage early adoption while gradually reducing government support over time.

The proposed policy is unlikely to create major challenges for established electric vehicle manufacturers, as regenerative braking is already available on several popular models.
