India’s green hydrogen ambitions received renewed momentum at the 2nd Bharat Green Hydrogen Summit 2026, where Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shri Shripad Yesso Naik called for collective efforts to establish “Made in India Green Hydrogen” as a globally trusted symbol of clean energy, technological excellence and sustainable industrial growth.
Addressing the summit organized by FICCI, the Union Minister said the global energy transition has reached a stage where the focus is no longer on whether clean hydrogen will become a key pillar of industrial decarbonization, but on which nations will emerge as leaders in the evolving energy landscape.
He highlighted the progress made under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, stating that production-linked incentives, indigenous electrolyser manufacturing, demand creation across refineries and fertilizer plants, pilot projects in mobility, shipping and steel, and supportive policy measures are translating government intent into commercial opportunities. He also noted that India’s hydrogen ecosystem is rapidly evolving, citing the inauguration of the country’s first indigenously developed hydrogen-powered train as an example of India’s growing technological capabilities.
Hon’ble Union Minister further emphasized that achieving global leadership in the hydrogen economy will require more than production capacity. Innovation, competitive costs, resilient supply chains, internationally accepted standards, skilled manpower and strong international partnerships will be essential to building a globally competitive clean energy ecosystem.

Gujarat Positions Itself as Hydrogen Hub
Speaking at the summit, Shri Rushikesh Ganeshbhai Patel, Minister of State for Energy, Government of Gujarat, said the state is positioning itself as India’s hydrogen growth engine through abundant renewable energy resources, world-class ports, robust industrial infrastructure and a dedicated Green Hydrogen Policy.
He added that Gujarat is moving from policy formulation to implementation and aims to attract investments, generate employment, and strengthen India’s position as a global producer and exporter of clean hydrogen and green ammonia.
International Collaboration Key to Sector Growth
Sharing an international perspective, Ed Jager, Minister (Commercial), High Commission of Canada in India, said India’s ambition to become a global hydrogen hub is both credible and achievable. He noted that Canada is committed to collaborating with India on research, technology, standards, certification, financing and innovation to build resilient global hydrogen value chains.
Focus on Implementation
Shri Rajnath Ram, Adviser (Energy), NITI Aayog, said the National Green Hydrogen Mission has entered its implementation phase with strong policy support, incentives for electrolyser manufacturing and increasing industry participation. According to him, the next phase should prioritize faster project execution, stronger domestic demand, bankable offtake agreements and resilient supply chains to establish India as a reliable global supplier of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives.

Industry Calls for Integrated Ecosystem
Industry leaders also highlighted the economic potential of the hydrogen economy.
Shri Derek Michael Shah, Chair of the FICCI Green Hydrogen Committee and CEO & MD, L&T Energy GreenTech, said India’s renewable energy strength, manufacturing capabilities and policy support provide a strong foundation for becoming a global leader in clean hydrogen production and exports. He stressed the need for integrated development across renewable energy, hydrogen production, storage, logistics and end-use industries.
Shri Vipul Tuli, Chair of the FICCI Renewable Energy CEOs Committee and President & CEO (Renewables West), Sembcorp Industries, said renewable hydrogen has the potential to strengthen India’s energy security while creating new manufacturing and export opportunities.
Meanwhile, Shri Jyoti Vij, Director General, FICCI, said India is targeting nearly 10% of the global hydrogen market by 2030, with a focus on developing export infrastructure, trusted supply chains and long-term international partnerships.
During the summit, FICCI and EY jointly released the report, “Towards a Green Hydrogen Economy: India’s Export Competitiveness and Strategic Outlook,” outlining India’s roadmap for becoming a globally competitive exporter of clean hydrogen and its derivatives.
