SPML Infra Limited, a leading publicly listed infrastructure development company in India has achieved a significant milestone in its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) journey with the successful completion of key international safety, performance and transportation certification and testing requirements for its proprietary 104.4 kWh battery pack. Developed using SPML’s own intellectual property, the battery pack marks an important step in the Company’s efforts to build indigenous technology and strengthen its capabilities across the energy-storage value chain.

The battery pack has been engineered as part of SPML Infra’s strategy to develop indigenous technology and manufacturing capabilities to serve India’s rapidly growing grid-scale energy storage market. The initiative reflects the Company’s focus on building greater control over product development, engineering and technology evolution within India.

The SPML-developed battery pack has successfully completed requirements under UL9540A, IEC 62619, IEC 63056, IEC 60730, IEC 61000-6-2 and IEC 61000-6-4, along with UN38.3 testing at both the battery-pack and system levels.

Collectively, these standards and testing requirements cover critical aspects of battery and system safety and performance, including thermal runaway assessment, battery safety and performance, functional safety, electromagnetic compatibility and transportation safety. The successful completion of these requirements represents an important validation of the engineering and safety foundations of SPML Infra’s proprietary BESS technology.

Building Indigenous BESS Technology and Manufacturing

A key part of this milestone is the development of a 104.4 kWh battery pack based on SPML’s own intellectual property. The move strengthens the Company’s in-house capabilities across battery product development, manufacturing and technology evolution, while positioning it to address the growing demand for battery energy storage solutions in the Indian market. SPML Infra is building its BESS manufacturing and integration capabilities in Pune, Maharashtra, covering battery pack assembly, engineering, system integration and large-scale project execution.

The development marks an important step in SPML’s broader strategy to localize critical BESS engineering and technology capabilities in India. By developing these capabilities in-house, the Company aims to gain greater control over product development, customization and future technology enhancements as the energy storage market evolves.

SPML believes that combining proprietary battery engineering with domestic manufacturing capabilities and its established EPC expertise can provide a differentiated platform for participating in India’s rapidly emerging energy storage ecosystem. This integrated approach could enable the Company to develop solutions suited to evolving grid and renewable energy requirements while strengthening its position across the BESS value chain.

Abhinandan Sethi, Managing Director, SPML Infra Limited said: The validation of our proprietary 104.4 kWh battery pack represents an important milestone in SPML Infra’s energy storage journey. What makes this particularly significant for us is that we are developing technology and engineering capabilities within SPML, rather than limiting our role to manufacturing or project execution. Completion of these international certification and testing requirements provides important validation of the safety and engineering foundations of our product.

Our ambition is to build an integrated Indian energy storage platform spanning proprietary product development, manufacturing, system integration and large-scale project execution. We believe this combination can create significant long-term value as energy storage becomes an increasingly critical component of India’s power infrastructure.”

Advancing Towards Commercial Deployment

India’s rapid expansion of renewable energy is driving the need for reliable energy storage solutions that can support renewable integration, balance the grid, manage peak demand and enhance overall grid stability. For SPML Infra, BESS represents a natural extension of its established expertise in power infrastructure and is emerging as an important area of future growth. The completion of certification and testing requirements for its proprietary 104.4 kWh battery pack marks a significant step towards the commercialization of its BESS technology and the development of a domestic manufacturing platform.

Going forward, the company plans to further expand its energy storage technology portfolio and strengthen its capabilities across the BESS value chain. These efforts are aimed at enabling SPML Infra to develop solutions aligned with the evolving needs of India’s utility-scale energy storage market and participate more deeply in the country’s growing transition towards a more flexible and resilient power system.
