Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation is set to acquire a 49% stake in a large-scale renewable energy project being developed by Hero Future Energies (HFE), combining solar and wind generation with battery storage in Karnataka.
Under the partnership, Sumitomo Corporation will invest in Clean Solar Power (Baniyana) Pvt. Ltd., the company undertaking the project. Hero Solar Energy Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of HFE will hold the remaining 51% stake. The project combines approximately 500 MWp of solar and wind generation capacity with a 200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). Sumitomo Corporation announced its participation on 05th October, 2026.
Solar, Wind and Battery Storage to Support Round-The-Clock Supply
Located in Bidar district, Karnataka, the project is designed to combine different renewable generation sources with battery storage to address fluctuations in power generation.
Solar and wind resources have different generation patterns, while battery storage can help manage variations caused by weather conditions and the time of day. The integrated configuration is intended to support a more consistent supply of renewable electricity, including during periods of higher demand.
The project is planned to supply electricity primarily to SJVN Limited, an Indian government-owned power company under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). Any surplus electricity is expected to be sold through the power exchange market.
The project’s scheduled commercial operation date is March 2027.

Battery Storage Takes Centre Stage
The 200 MWh battery system will play an important role in managing the project’s electricity output. The PPA requires stable power supply, particularly during morning and evening periods when electricity demand can be higher. Battery storage, combined with energy management capabilities, is therefore expected to help balance the output from the solar and wind assets.
The project represents a shift from renewable generation based solely on individual technologies towards an integrated model combining solar, wind and energy storage.
Sumitomo Expands Renewable Energy Presence In India
The investment provides an opportunity for Sumitomo Corporation to strengthen its renewable energy platform in India while building expertise in integrated energy management.
The Japanese company has experience across renewable power development and operation, as well as energy management activities involving aggregation and battery storage control. Through its participation in the Karnataka project, Sumitomo aims to deepen its capabilities in managing multiple renewable sources alongside storage.
The company said the experience could support further expansion into markets across Asia and other regions where increasing renewable generation is creating new requirements for grid management and stable power supply.

Hero Future Energies Adds Strategic Partner
The partnership brings Sumitomo Corporation into a project that combines multiple renewable generation technologies with large-scale battery storage, strengthening Hero Future Energies’ strategic capabilities.
HFE Founder and Chairman Shri Rahul Munjal said the partnership demonstrates the company’s ability to execute complex renewable energy projects at scale, while also highlighting the role of partnerships in bringing together capital and execution capabilities as India’s energy transition advances.
Sumitomo Corporation’s participation also reflects the growing interest in renewable projects that can address not only clean energy generation, but also the challenges associated with intermittency and grid stability.
Project At A Glance

The project is expected to contribute to India’s expanding renewable energy capacity while demonstrating how solar, wind and battery storage can be combined to deliver a more flexible and reliable clean power supply.
As India’s renewable generation base continues to grow, projects that pair generation with energy storage could become increasingly important in managing variability and meeting electricity demand across different periods of the day.
