Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has approved a capital investment of approximately ₹500 crores to establish additional manufacturing facilities for thermal and nuclear power sets at its Heavy Electrical Equipment Plant (HEEP) in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. The Board of Directors of BHEL have approved the investment proposal at its meeting held on 14th October 2026. The proposed investment is aimed at expansion of its manufacturing facilities at the Haridwar unit for equipment used in thermal and nuclear power generation.
BHEL Plans to Expand Manufacturing Capabilities
The proposed capital expenditure will support the development of additional manufacturing facilities at BHEL’s HEEP unit in Haridwar. The investment covers manufacturing capabilities for both thermal and nuclear power sets, placing the facility at the centre of the company’s planned capacity expansion.
BHEL is a major Indian manufacturer of power-generation equipment and provides engineering and manufacturing solutions across the power and industrial sectors. Its manufacturing operations support equipment requirements across conventional power generation and other infrastructure segments.
The proposed investment reflects the importance of manufacturing capacity in meeting equipment requirements across India’s power sector. Thermal power continues to form part of the country’s electricity supply mix, while nuclear power capacity is also a focus area in India’s longer-term energy development plans.
Board Approves Organizational Restructuring
In a separate decision taken at the same meeting, BHEL’s Board approved the merger of its Electrical Machines Repair Plant (EMRP) in Mumbai and Electronics Division (EDN) in Bengaluru into a single unit under EDN.
The merger is scheduled to take effect from 01st November 2026. The organizational change forms part of the decisions announced by BHEL following its Board meeting on 14th October.
Supporting India’s Power Equipment Manufacturing
The proposed investment in Haridwar adds to the manufacturing capacity development taking place within India’s power equipment sector. Additional facilities for thermal and nuclear power sets could support BHEL’s manufacturing operations as equipment requirements evolve across these segments.
The development also brings thermal and nuclear manufacturing capabilities into focus at the company’s Haridwar facility, reflecting the continuing role of domestic engineering and manufacturing in supporting power-sector infrastructure.
With the capital investment approval and the organizational restructuring decision, BHEL has outlined two separate measures concerning its manufacturing operations and business structure.
