Bajel Projects, an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) player in power transmission infrastructure has been awarded a contract covering the supply and installation of two 220kV GIS substations in Mumbai. The project involves separate substation packages at the Salsette and Powai receiving stations.
The order highlights the role of advanced substation technology in supporting urban power infrastructure, particularly in densely populated cities where land availability is limited and electricity demand continues to grow.
Bajel Projects’ Mumbai Order Covers Two Substation Packages
The contract comprises two packages covering the supply and installation of high-voltage GIS substations at separate locations in Mumbai.
Package A: 220kV GIS at Salsette Receiving Station
The first package covers the supply and installation of a 220kV Gas Insulated Switchgear substation at the Salsette Receiving Station.
Package B: 220kV Outdoor GIS Substation at Powai Receiving Station
The second package involves the supply and installation of a 220kV outdoor GIS substation at the Powai Receiving Station.
Together, the two projects are expected to add capacity and support the reliability of Mumbai’s power transmission network.
Compact Substation Technology for a Growing City’s Power Needs
Mumbai’s dense urban environment presents challenges for electrical infrastructure development, particularly where land is scarce and electricity demand continues to rise.
Gas Insulated Switchgear technology offers a space-efficient alternative to conventional air-insulated substations. Its compact design makes GIS installations suitable for urban locations where high-voltage equipment must be accommodated within limited space.
The Salsette and Powai projects bring this technology into focus as part of Mumbai’s wider power transmission infrastructure. Executing high-voltage substation projects in an established metropolis also requires precise engineering, careful site planning and stringent safety measures.

Bajel Projects’ Order Classification Framework
Bajel Projects classifies its orders into five categories according to their value. The classification framework sets out the following ranges:

Under this framework, the Salsette and Powai GIS substation contract qualifies as a Major Order. The classification provides an indication of the contract’s scale within the company’s project portfolio.
Bajel Projects Highlights Engineering and Execution Capabilities
Commenting on the order, Rajesh Ganesh, Managing Director & CEO, Bajel Projects Limited, said:
“We are proud to contribute to strengthening Mumbai’s power infrastructure. Building high-voltage GIS substations inside a working metropolis calls for precise engineering, tight site planning and uncompromising safety, and this order reflects the confidence our clients place in Bajel’s execution capabilities. Mumbai city’s growing power needs demand a grid that is resilient and future-ready, and we are committed to delivering both projects to the highest standards of quality.”
The order brings attention to the engineering and execution capabilities required to deliver high-voltage infrastructure in space-constrained urban environments. Through the two substation packages, Bajel Projects will undertake work at Salsette and Powai to support Mumbai’s transmission network.
As cities expand and electricity requirements evolve, reliable transmission infrastructure and space-efficient substation technology remain important considerations in meeting urban power needs.
