Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly being viewed not only as a technology opportunity but also as a potential new source of revenue for India’s communication service providers. As the country’s network infrastructure evolves to support growing AI workloads, telecom and AI are expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping next-generation digital services.

A new study commissioned by Ciena indicates that 67 percent of Indian service providers strongly believe AI-driven network services could become a major driver of new revenue over the next three to five years. The findings point to a broader shift in the communications industry, with service providers looking beyond traditional connectivity services towards infrastructure and network capabilities designed for AI-intensive applications. This evolution could position telecom and AI as key enablers of new service models and monetization opportunities.

The research was conducted by Censuswide among 1,200 telecommunications providers, wholesale fibre network operators and regional service providers across 12 markets. India accounted for 100 respondents in the survey.

AI Is Creating a New Opportunity for Network Providers

The growing adoption of AI is creating new demands on communication networks. AI applications increasingly depend on the movement of large volumes of data between data centres, cloud platforms, enterprises and distributed computing locations. This is creating an opportunity for network operators to develop services specifically designed around the performance, capacity and reliability requirements of AI workloads.

The Ciena study found particularly strong expectations around managed optical fibre network services. Nearly 98 per cent of Indian respondents expect such services to contribute to revenue generated from connecting distributed AI compute clusters over the next three years.

The finding highlights how the expansion of AI infrastructure could have implications beyond data centres and computing hardware. As AI workloads become more distributed, high-capacity fibre connectivity could become an increasingly important component of the infrastructure connecting different computing environments.

For communication providers, this could create opportunities to move towards higher-value network services rather than relying primarily on conventional connectivity revenues.

Optical Networks Become Critical to AI Connectivity

The anticipated growth in AI-related network traffic is also putting greater emphasis on optical infrastructure. According to the research, 88 percent of Indian respondents indicated a strong sense of urgency around upgrading optical networks to support the requirements of premium enterprise AI connectivity services. The survey also found that 93 percent consider next-generation optical technologies, including higher-capacity wavelengths and power-efficient coherent optics, critical to making AI connectivity services more competitive and profitable.

Network performance is emerging as another important consideration. The study found that 96 percent of respondents consider guaranteed low-latency performance either very important or absolutely critical for generating revenue from enterprise edge deployments. Meanwhile, 37 percent identified stable performance and low network jitter as areas with particularly strong potential for premium services.

These findings suggest that the commercial opportunity around AI may increasingly depend on the ability of communication providers to deliver networks capable of handling demanding workloads with predictable performance.

From Connectivity Providers to AI Infrastructure Partners

The shift could eventually change the role of communication providers within India’s digital economy. As enterprises deploy AI applications across cloud, edge and private infrastructure, networks will need to connect computing resources located across multiple sites. This creates potential opportunities around managed fibre, cloud connectivity, edge computing, network automation and other specialized services.

The Ciena research also points towards growing interest in emerging revenue models. In India, 58 percent of respondents expect to generate revenue from multi-cloud connectivity management, while the same proportion expects opportunities from consumption-based bandwidth services. The study further found that 88 percent expect services such as GPU-as-a-Service, edge computing, localized AI inference and private wireless to generate at least 10 percent of total enterprise revenue over the next three years.

Physical AI is another area attracting attention. The survey found that 93 percent of Indian respondents see moderate or high revenue potential from physical AI applications for private networks and edge computing. Such applications include autonomous industrial systems, machine vision and remote-control technologies.

For India, the implications could extend across the wider digital infrastructure ecosystem. The expansion of AI computing capacity will require not only processors and data centres, but also high-capacity networks capable of moving data between increasingly distributed computing environments.

Gautam Billa, Vice President, Solutions Engineering and Chief Technology Officer, Asia Pacific, India and Japan at Ciena said Indian service providers are moving their attention towards AI infrastructure development and monetization after the country’s rapid 5G expansion. The findings, he said indicate increasing confidence among service providers in the revenue potential of AI-driven services.

The research therefore points to a potentially important transition for India’s communication industry. AI may not remain simply a source of additional network traffic. Over the next several years, it could become a catalyst for new network architectures, specialized connectivity services and entirely new revenue models for communication providers.

As India’s AI ecosystem expands, the ability to connect computing infrastructure quickly, reliably and efficiently could become as important as the computing capacity itself.
