BTS Bioenergy, a leader in organic waste transformation and renewable energy infrastructure, has announced the opening of the Maryland Organics Recovery Center (MORC). This new satellite facility complements its flagship anaerobic digestion plant, the Maryland Bioenergy Center (MBC), and addresses the rising need among food distribution centers for scalable, efficient food waste management.

MORC provides a customized, zero-waste service model that enables food manufacturers, distributors, and logistics operators to divert inedible, expired, or recalled food waste away from landfills. The facility also reduces transportation burdens by offering local sorting and consolidation services, cutting costs and carbon emissions.

Engineered for maximum resource recovery, MORC processes a wide variety of materials including cardboard, plastics, pallets, and glass, supporting BTS Bioenergy’s mission to deliver sustainable, circular waste solutions. This expansion bridges the operational gap between the distribution sector and traditional waste management, reinforcing the company’s leadership in building a low-carbon, zero-waste future.

“There has always been a disconnect between the logistics of food distribution and the realities of food waste recycling,” said Vinnie Bevivino, Senior Director of Commercial at BTS Bioenergy. “MORC solves that by offering a streamlined solution that makes recycling inedible, expired, or recalled food easier, more cost-effective, and better aligned with how distribution centers operate.”

MORC receives palletized food waste directly from distribution partners, eliminating the need for third-party processors or specialized trucking. It prepares these loads for recycling and transfers the organic content to MBC for conversion into renewable energy and nutrient-rich soil amendments through the AD process.

“MORC represents a strategic expansion of our infrastructure that enables BTS Bioenergy to better serve the food distribution sector while advancing our mission of landfill diversion,” said Nick Thomas, CEO of BTS Bioenergy.

Through its advanced AD technology, BTS Bioenergy diverts organic waste from landfills and incinerators, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and generating renewable natural gas and nutrient-rich soil products. The launch of MORC supports the company’s continued commitment to building a cleaner, circular economy across the United States.
