NTPC Limited (NTPC) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL) have signed Supplementary Joint Venture Agreement-III (SJVA-III) for Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited (MUNPL), marking a significant step towards expanding the capacity of the proposed Meja Stage-II thermal power project.

The agreement was signed in Lucknow on June 04, 2026 and incorporates provisions related to the enhancement of Meja Stage-II’s generation capacity from the earlier planned configuration of 2×660 MW (1,320 MW) to 3×800 MW (2,400 MW).

MUNPL is a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC and UPRVUNL and has been established to develop and operate power generation projects in Uttar Pradesh. The latest agreement formalizes the revized project configuration and lays the foundation for a substantial increase in planned power generation capacity.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior leadership from both organizations, including the Managing Director of UPRVUNL, the Chief Executive Officer of MUNPL, and other senior officials from NTPC, UPRVUNL, and MUNPL.

The proposed expansion represents an increase of 1,080 MW over the previously planned capacity and is expected to strengthen the long-term power generation capabilities of the project. Once implemented, the enhanced capacity is expected to contribute significantly toward meeting the growing electricity requirements of Uttar Pradesh, one of India’s largest power-consuming states.

The Meja Stage-II expansion also reflects continued collaboration between central and state-sector power utilities in developing large-scale generation infrastructure. Such projects play an important role in ensuring reliable electricity supply for industrial development, urban growth, commercial activities, and residential consumers.

The revized project configuration is expected to support regional energy security while reinforcing efforts to expand India’s power infrastructure in line with rising demand. The expansion further demonstrates NTPC’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the country’s power generation capacity through strategic partnerships and long-term infrastructure investments.

As India’s electricity consumption continues to grow, capacity enhancement initiatives such as the Meja Stage-II expansion are expected to remain critical in supporting economic development and ensuring dependable power availability across the country.
