Tamil Nadu is set to expand its power generation infrastructure with a proposed 1,600 MW supercritical thermal power station at Tuticorin, with the project estimated to involve an investment of ₹20,800 crore.
Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Thiru C. Joseph Vijay announced the project in the state Assembly on Monday as part of a broader push to strengthen the state’s electricity infrastructure and meet rising power demand. The proposed Tuticorin power project will be developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model and is planned to comprise two units of 800 MW each. The announcement comes as Tamil Nadu looks to strengthen its power generation capacity amid increasing electricity consumption across residential, commercial and industrial segments.
New Tuticorin Plant planned as part of Power Capacity Expansion
The proposed supercritical thermal power station is expected to add 1,600 MW of generation capacity to Tamil Nadu’s power infrastructure. The project is also linked to the planned transition from the older generation units at the existing Tuticorin Thermal Power Station.
The proposed facility is expected to replace the five existing 210 MW units at the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station. The development would represent a significant addition to the state’s thermal generation infrastructure, particularly as Tamil Nadu continues to experience growing electricity demand.
The government has also highlighted the need to maintain reliable power availability during periods of high demand while the state continues to expand renewable energy generation.

₹33,066 Crore Transmission Upgrade Planned
Alongside the new generation project, Tamil Nadu has announced a major investment programme to strengthen its transmission network. Under the Tamil Nadu Transmission Improvement Scheme, ₹33,066 crore has been earmarked for the development of 196 new substations and around 15,000 km of transmission lines. The programme is aimed at strengthening the state’s electricity transmission infrastructure and improving the movement of power from generation centres to major consumption centres.
The transmission investment is particularly significant as Tamil Nadu continues to expand its industrial and commercial base, increasing the need for reliable power evacuation and distribution infrastructure.
Focus on Grid Readiness and Rising Electricity Demand
Tamil Nadu has been rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity, particularly through wind and solar power. However, renewable generation can vary depending on weather and time of day. The state is also developing battery energy storage capacity to help store surplus renewable electricity and make it available during periods of higher demand.
Against this backdrop, the proposed Tuticorin thermal power project is expected to form part of the state’s broader approach to maintaining grid reliability while its renewable energy and storage infrastructure continues to develop. The government has also announced additional investments to strengthen Chennai’s electricity distribution network. The planned works estimated at ₹1,762 crore include new substations and the replacement of ageing power infrastructure.

The proposed ₹20,800 crore Tuticorin project together with the ₹33,066 crore transmission improvement programme marks a major infrastructure push for Tamil Nadu’s electricity sector. For the power industry, the developments point to continued investment in generation capacity, transmission infrastructure and grid modernization as electricity demand rises across the state.
