Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has crossed the landmark 20 GW mark in operational renewable energy capacity, becoming the first renewable energy company in India to reach this scale primarily through greenfield project development. The achievement reinforces AGEL’s position as the country’s largest renewable energy producer and highlights its contribution to India’s clean energy transition.

With an annual generation capacity of more than 52 billion units of clean electricity, AGEL’s renewable energy portfolio contributes close to 3% of India’s total electricity consumption. The company’s operational capacity is sufficient to supply electricity to a city the size of New York for an entire year or meet the combined annual power demand of Mumbai and New Delhi.

The milestone has been achieved within just ten years of commissioning the company’s first renewable energy project at Kamuthi, Tamil Nadu, in 2016. During this period, AGEL has built one of India’s fastest-growing renewable energy portfolios through greenfield development. In FY26, the company added 5,051 MW of renewable energy capacity, the highest annual capacity addition recorded by any company outside China, further strengthening its leadership in the global renewable energy sector.

Commenting on the milestone, Mr. Sagar Adani, Executive Director, AGEL said: “Surpassing 20 GW demonstrates what disciplined execution and long-term vision can achieve. Today, AGEL, along with our efficient team and longstanding partners, delivers renewable electricity almost equivalent to annual power requirement of Mumbai and New Delhi combined, reinforcing the country’s energy security while accelerating its clean energy transition.”

The milestone follows Mr. Adani’s address at the inaugural Adani Green Energy Dialogue held on June 26 during London Climate Action Week at The Science Museum, London. At the forum, he highlighted the importance of accelerating electrification through renewable energy integrated with large-scale storage to strengthen energy security, improve affordability and deliver reliable, round-the-clock clean power.

The addition marks India’s largest and fastest renewable energy capacity expansion to date. AGEL’s operational portfolio comprises about 14.2 GW of solar, 2.7 GW of wind and 3.3 GW of wind-solar hybrid capacity. Additionally, AGEL has commissioned 3.55 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), the world’s largest deployment outside China and one of the fastest executed globally.

“As renewable energy assumes a larger share of India’s power mix, battery storage is becoming central to delivering reliable, dispatchable clean power, “ Mr. Adani added. AGEL plans to add 10 GWh of battery storage in FY27 and expand its portfolio to 50 GWh over the next five years, supporting its 50 GW renewable energy target by 2030.

Khavda in Kutch, Gujarat, is the centrepiece of AGEL’s next phase of growth and the site of the world’s largest renewable energy plant. Spread across 538 sq km of barren land, the project has a planned capacity of 30 GW, covering an area five times the size of Paris and almost as large as Mumbai. AGEL has already commissioned 9.5 GW of solar capacity at the site, representing more than 30 per cent of the project’s planned capacity.

Adani Green Energy’s marquee projects since inception:

Over the years, Adani Green Energy has expanded its renewable energy portfolio through the commissioning of large-scale solar, wind and hybrid power projects across India. From its first utility-scale solar project in Tamil Nadu to the ongoing development of the world’s largest renewable energy park at Khavda in Gujarat, the company has steadily strengthened its presence in the country’s clean energy sector. Below are some of the key milestones in AGEL’s renewable energy journey.

2016 – Kamuthi Solar Power Project, Tamil Nadu

Commissioned one of the world’s largest single-location solar power plants at Kamuthi, marking the beginning of AGEL’s utility-scale renewable energy expansion.

2017–2019 – Portfolio Expansion

Expanded its solar and wind energy portfolio through the commissioning of multiple renewable energy projects across several Indian states, increasing its operational capacity.

2020-2022 – Accelerated Renewable Growth

Strengthened its renewable energy footprint by adding large-scale solar, wind and hybrid power projects while continuing investments in sustainable energy infrastructure.

2023-2025 – Scaling Utility-Scale Renewable Energy

Continued commissioning new renewable assets and expanding hybrid energy projects to support India’s growing clean energy demand and strengthen grid reliability.

2026 – 20 GW Operational Capacity Milestone

Became the first renewable energy company in India to surpass 20 GW of operational renewable energy capacity, achieved predominantly through greenfield development.

Khavda Renewable Energy Park, Gujarat

AGEL’s flagship Khavda Renewable Energy Plant in Kutch, Gujarat, represents the company’s next phase of expansion. Once completed, the project will have a planned capacity of 30 GW, making it the world’s largest renewable energy plant and a key contributor to India’s long-term clean energy ambitions.
