Tata Power has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited (RECPDCL) for the acquisition of Ryapte Power Transmission Limited, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) established to develop a major transmission infrastructure project in Karnataka.
The project marks another significant addition to Tata Power’s transmission portfolio and is expected to strengthen the electricity network in one of India’s fastest-growing power markets. Under the terms of the award, Tata Power will develop, operate and maintain the transmission system for a period of 35 years.
The project will generate annual transmission charges of approximately ₹521.07 crores and is scheduled to achieve commercial operation within 30 months from the date of SPV transfer. The award was secured through a competitive bidding process conducted by RECPDCL.
Transmission Infrastructure Across Karnataka
The Ryapte transmission project involves the development of approximately 250 kilometres of transmission infrastructure across key locations in Karnataka.
The scope includes the construction of a 400 kV double-circuit transmission line connecting the proposed Ryapte Air Insulated Substation (AIS) in Tumkur district with the proposed 400/220 kV Doddathaggalli Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) near Hosakote. Another 400 kV double-circuit transmission line will connect the existing Kolar substation to the proposed Doddathaggalli GIS substation.
The project also includes 220 kV double-circuit transmission lines linking the proposed Doddathaggalli GIS substation with existing substations at Ekarajapura, Hosakote and Sarjapura. In addition, underground cable infrastructure will be developed to strengthen connectivity between these locations.
New Substations to Enhance Grid Reliability
As part of the project, Tata Power will establish two greenfield substations designed to support growing electricity demand and improve transmission efficiency. The infrastructure includes a 5×500 MVA, 400/220 kV Air Insulated Substation (AIS) at Ryapte in Tumkur district and a 3×500 MVA, 400/220 kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) at Doddathaggalli near Hosakote. These facilities are expected to improve power evacuation capability, strengthen grid reliability and support future industrial, commercial and residential electricity demand in the region.
Supporting India’s Expanding Power Network
India’s rapidly growing economy, increasing urbanization and rising electricity consumption are driving substantial investment in transmission infrastructure. Strengthening transmission networks is essential for ensuring reliable power delivery, reducing congestion and supporting the integration of renewable energy into the national grid. The Ryapte project aligns with these objectives by enhancing connectivity between key substations and improving the overall resilience of Karnataka’s electricity network.
For Tata Power, the award further reinforces its position in India’s transmission sector and reflects the company’s continued focus on expanding its infrastructure portfolio through competitively bid projects. The development is expected to contribute to long-term grid modernization efforts while supporting the country’s broader energy security and sustainability goals.
