South Korean optoelectronics company Seoul Semiconductor is exploring the possibility of establishing a manufacturing facility in India as part of the country’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0.
According to multiple media reports, the company is holding discussions with several state governments, including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat to evaluate potential locations for a future manufacturing investment. The move is understood to be part of Seoul Semiconductor’s strategy to diversify its global manufacturing footprint while tapping into India’s rapidly growing electronics and semiconductor market.
Seoul Semiconductor is among the world’s leading manufacturers of LED and optoelectronics technologies, with existing manufacturing operations in South Korea, China and Vietnam. Reports suggest the company is considering India as a strategic destination to expand its production capabilities, supported by the incentives offered under the recently announced India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0.

Industry sources indicate the company may initially focus on establishing an assembly or packaging facility before considering broader manufacturing operations. Such an approach would align with India’s efforts to strengthen domestic semiconductor packaging, electronics manufacturing and advanced supply chain capabilities.
India’s updated semiconductor incentive programme aims to encourage global semiconductor and electronics companies to establish manufacturing, packaging and advanced technology facilities within the country. The initiative forms a key part of the government’s broader strategy to build a resilient semiconductor ecosystem and reduce dependence on imports. The discussions also reflect growing international interest in India’s electronics manufacturing sector, driven by government incentives, expanding infrastructure and rising domestic demand for semiconductor-enabled products.
While Seoul Semiconductor has not officially announced an investment decision, the reported discussions highlight India’s increasing attractiveness as a destination for semiconductor manufacturing and advanced electronics production. If the project moves forward, it could further strengthen India’s position in the global semiconductor value chain while creating new opportunities for technology development, manufacturing and skilled employment.
