Renesas Electronics Corporation, a top provider of advanced semiconductor technologies, announced its support for the efficient power conversion and distribution within the 800 Volt Direct Current (DC) power architecture introduced by NVIDIA. This architecture is designed to power the next generation of AI infrastructure, enabling smarter and faster AI data centers.

As GPU-driven AI workloads increase and data center power demands rise to multi-hundred megawatt levels, there is a pressing need for power architectures that are both scalable and energy-efficient. Wide bandgap semiconductors such as GaN FET switches have become critical due to their high-speed switching, reduced energy losses, and superior thermal performance. These GaN devices facilitate the implementation of 800V DC power buses within data center racks, reducing power distribution losses and minimizing the need for bulky bus bars, while allowing reuse of 48V components through DC/DC converters.

Renesas’ GaN-based solutions deliver efficient and compact DC/DC power conversion across operating voltages from 48V to 400V, with stacking capabilities up to 800V. Using the LLC Direct Current Transformer (LLC DCX) topology, these converters achieve efficiency levels as high as 98%. For AC/DC conversion, Renesas utilizes bi-directional GaN switches to streamline rectifier designs and improve power density. Their REXFET MOSFETs, drivers, and controllers further enhance the performance of these power conversion modules. More details can be found on renesas.com/power.
