Industry Leaders Champion Water Stewardship for a Resilient India

Agriculture accounts for nearly 80% of India’s freshwater consumption, making efficient water management an urgent priority. Rapid groundwater depletion, unpredictable rainfall, and climate change are worsening water stress across several regions. Government estimates indicate that India is among the world’s most water-stressed countries, highlighting the need to adopt sustainable water-use practices in both agriculture and industry.

Industry leaders are highlighting the need for responsible water stewardship, sustainable manufacturing, and community-driven conservation efforts.

Mr. Rajesh Aggarwal, Managing Director of Insecticides India Ltd. and Vice-Chairman of the Crop Care Federation of India said: “We reaffirm our commitment to responsible water stewardship and sustainable manufacturing. We have implemented Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems and successfully achieved this milestone at three of our manufacturing locations, ensuring responsible water management and minimizing environmental impact.

Our continued compliance with CREP guidelines is complemented by focused sustainability initiatives aimed at protecting freshwater resources while supporting responsible agricultural growth. Beyond manufacturing, through the IIL Foundation, we are also working on check dams and rainwater harvesting systems in villages under our CSR projects, contributing to water conservation and community resilience. At IIL, every drop saved is a step toward a more sustainable future.”

Mr. Ish Mohan Garg, Senior Vice President, Calderys APAC region added: “Water is a critical resource for both communities and industry, and how we manage it will shape our future. At Calderys, sustainability is a core principle that guides how we approach growth and innovation. Our plant in Odisha (CAPES) is a clear example of this ambition, a project designed from the outset to integrate environmental responsibility into every aspect of its development. The facility aims to reduce carbon emissions through the increased use of green fuels and solar power, while also promoting a more circular approach through the use of recycled materials. In addition, greenery will cover 33% of the site upon completion.

When it comes to water, dedicated systems are being implemented to harvest rainwater and reuse it for non-process needs such as sanitation and landscaping. The plant is also equipped with a zero-effluent discharge system, ensuring that water is carefully managed and reused at every stage. Further measures, including the installation of bag filters, contribute to reducing overall environmental impact.

Sustainable industrial development is not optional; it is a responsibility. We encourage industries and communities to take practical steps to preserve water resources and build long-term resilience.”
