GK Energy Limited, a decentralized renewable energy infrastructure company, has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to establish 150 MW / 300 MWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Maharashtra.
The award follows MSEDCL’s Tariff-Based Global Competitive Bidding process, conducted through an e-reverse auction, for a total of 2,000 MW / 4,000 MWh of BESS with Viability Gap Funding (VGF) support. GK Energy emerged as one of the successful bidders for 150 MW / 300 MWh at a tariff of ₹2,38,000 per MW per month. The project is expected to generate annual revenue of ₹42.84 crore, excluding GST, over a 15-year period from the commencement of commercial operations.
The award marks GK Energy’s entry into the battery energy storage segment and adds a new business vertical to its existing renewable energy operations. The company has been expanding beyond its established solar-powered agricultural pumping business into areas including rooftop solar, distributed renewable energy infrastructure and now BESS. The broader strategy is aimed at building a diversified renewable energy platform serving customers across rural, semi-urban and urban markets, while reducing dependence on any single programme, scheme or end market.

BESS technology enables electricity to be stored when generation is high or demand is low and supplied when it is needed. This capability is particularly relevant as the share of intermittent renewable sources such as solar and wind increases. Energy storage can help manage variations in renewable generation, balance electricity supply and demand, ease pressure on the grid and make renewable power available during periods of higher demand.
With its entry into BESS, GK Energy is expanding its capabilities across power generation, storage and distributed energy infrastructure. The company plans to build on its experience in executing renewable energy projects at scale, along with its decentralized operating network and presence across multiple states, as it explores opportunities in emerging clean energy segments.

The company also intends to apply its existing execution capabilities and field infrastructure across its solar agricultural pumping operations, rooftop solar, energy storage and other renewable energy opportunities. Through this broader portfolio, GK Energy aims to participate across multiple segments of India’s energy transition while developing its business verticals in parallel.
