Maharashtra is planning to expand its electric vehicle charging infrastructure by setting up charging stations at MSRTC depots and Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the state, as the government looks to support wider EV adoption and cleaner transport. The plan was announced by Maharashtra Transport Minister Shri Pratap Sarnaik while flagging off Tata Motors’ electric trucks at the Tardeo RTO in Mumbai.
The proposed charging network could make EV charging more accessible at key transport locations across Maharashtra and support the state’s growing transition towards electric mobility.
EV Charging Stations Planned at MSRTC Depots and RTOs
Under the proposed plan, electric vehicle charging stations would be established at Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) depots and RTOs across the state. The move is aimed at strengthening the charging infrastructure needed to support the increasing adoption of electric vehicles. A wider network of charging points could also help address one of the key challenges associated with EV adoption: the availability of convenient charging facilities.
The minister has also urged people to shift towards electric vehicles as part of efforts to reduce pollution.

Maharashtra Considers EV Charging Stations at Flyovers
The state government is also exploring another option to expand charging infrastructure.
According to the announcement, Maharashtra is considering setting up EV charging stations at flyovers through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. A proposal for this initiative has already been submitted to Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis for approval.
If approved, the model could allow private companies to participate in developing and operating charging infrastructure at suitable locations, potentially helping Maharashtra expand its EV charging network without relying entirely on public investment.

MSRTC Targets Fully Electric Bus Fleet by 2036
The charging infrastructure plan comes alongside a longer-term push to electrify public transport in Maharashtra.
MSRTC is targeting the conversion of its entire bus fleet to electric buses by 2036, according to the announcement. The transition would increase the importance of a reliable charging network across the state, particularly at bus depots where electric buses can be charged as part of regular fleet operations.

Building Maharashtra’s EV Charging Network
The proposed charging stations at RTOs and MSRTC depots could provide a more distributed charging network across Maharashtra while supporting the state’s broader electric mobility ambitions. The potential involvement of private companies through the PPP model could also create opportunities for EV charging operators, infrastructure companies and other businesses involved in electric mobility. However, the scale and timeline of the proposed expansion will depend on further approvals, implementation plans and the identification of suitable locations.
As EV adoption grows, Maharashtra is focusing on expanding the charging infrastructure needed to support this transition.
