Engineers developing and validating modern automotive electronic systems have a new solution for high-precision LIN communication. Kvaser has introduced the PCIe 4xLIN, a compact four-channel LIN interface designed to simplify LIN network testing, debugging, and validation. Combining galvanic isolation, synchronized timestamping, and seamless software compatibility, the interface enables reliable analysis of timing-critical events across complex automotive and industrial applications.

Key Highlights:

  • Four individually galvanically isolated LIN channels
  • FPGA-based LIN-IP technology with 1 µs timestamp resolution
  • LIN communication speeds up to 20 kbaud
  • Compatible with Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Supports the Kvaser CANlib SDK and standardized LINlib API
  • Software-based TimeSync for synchronized multi-device testing
  • Ideal for ECU development, HIL testing, automotive electronics, and industrial automation

The Kvaser PCIe 4xLIN provides four individually galvanically isolated LIN channels through a single PCIe card. FPGA-based Kvaser LIN-IP technology enables communication up to 20 kbaud with 1 µs timestamp resolution, allowing developers to capture timing-sensitive events with high precision and improve visibility during debugging and validation. The interface also supports simultaneous operation with multiple Kvaser interfaces, enabling test setups to scale as system complexity grows.

Thomas Roberts, Kvaser’s Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), said, “LIN continues to play a critical role in modern vehicle architectures, particularly as the number of distributed electronic functions grows. As systems scale, the challenge isn’t just accessing LIN data but in capturing and correlating it reliably across channels and interfaces. That’s exactly what the PCIe 4xLIN is designed to address.”

Faster Integration with Existing Tools

The Kvaser PCIe 4xLIN is fully compatible with applications built on the standardized Kvaser LINlib API, allowing integration into existing development environments without requiring software modifications. Applications developed for other Kvaser LIN hardware can run without changes, enabling engineering teams to transition quickly between projects and interfaces.

The interface supports both Windows and Linux and works with the Kvaser CANlib SDK, which includes LINlib and additional APIs, along with programming examples for C, C++, C#, Python, Delphi, and Visual Basic. Installed directly into a PCI Express slot and powered by the host system, it minimizes external cabling while simplifying deployment in desktop workstations, industrial computers, and test racks.

Accurate, system-wide time synchronization

The PCIe 4xLIN supports Kvaser’s software-based TimeSync technology, enabling synchronized timestamps across multiple devices and systems. This helps engineers accurately correlate events across LIN and CAN networks, reducing manual log analysis and improving the efficiency of validation workflows.

On Linux systems, the interface also exposes a PHC (PTP Hardware Clock) device that synchronizes with a host-referenced clock source using standard utilities such as phc2sys. This provides a reliable foundation for synchronized logging, automated testing, and precise event analysis across distributed test environments.

Designed for demanding environments

Designed for demanding industrial and embedded environments, the PCIe 4xLIN operates across a temperature range of −40°C to +85°C. Its compact low-profile PCIe form factor includes both short and long mounting brackets, making installation flexible across a variety of systems.

A single 26-pin high-density D-SUB connector provides access to all four LIN channels, helping reduce system complexity while supporting compact hardware designs. Typical applications include ECU development, automotive body electronics, HIL testing, multi-channel data logging, and industrial LIN communication systems.

Availability

The Kvaser PCIe 4xLIN will be available beginning July 2026.

With the introduction of the PCIe 4xLIN, Kvaser expands its portfolio of automotive communication interfaces with a solution focused on accurate timing analysis, synchronized multi-channel LIN communication, and scalable validation. Its combination of galvanic isolation, software compatibility, and industrial-grade design makes it well suited for engineers developing next-generation automotive and embedded systems.

Kvaser supplies advanced M2M communication solutions to engineers designing and deploying communication systems, primarily for vehicles. Our hardware and software products are used in a wide range of industries such as automotive, marine, rail, avionics, construction, agriculture, medical, defence, telecom, and industrial automation. Important technologies are CAN, LIN, Automotive Ethernet, as well as various wireless and cellular standards.
