The Tamil Nadu government has announced a major boost for electric vehicle (EV) owners by extending the 100% road tax exemption for EVs until December 31, 2027. The decision aligns with the state’s ambitious EV policy aimed at accelerating clean and sustainable mobility adoption across Tamil Nadu.
The exemption, which was first introduced in 2019, applies to all categories of electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, buses, and commercial EVs. This means both transport and non-transport vehicles will continue to enjoy full tax relief under the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1974. Officials from the Industries Department confirmed that the notification was issued to sustain EV affordability and stimulate both manufacturing and adoption. The move complements Tamil Nadu’s position as one of India’s top EV manufacturing hubs, home to major players such as Ola Electric, Hyundai, Ather Energy, and BYD.
Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa stated that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s administration remains “firmly committed to building a green transport future.” He noted that this extension will strengthen investor confidence while reducing the cost burden for consumers.
According to data from the Tamil Nadu transport department, EV registrations grew nearly 30% year-on-year in 2025, highlighting growing consumer interest supported by state incentives, improving charging infrastructure, and a robust manufacturing ecosystem. Analysts believe that continued tax relief will further accelerate EV penetration, helping Tamil Nadu achieve its goal of becoming India’s EV capital by 2030. The exemption also aligns with the national goal of achieving 30% EV sales by the end of the decade.
