GAIL (India) Ltd. has invited Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) bids for developing a 600 MW ground-mounted solar power project integrated with a 275 MW/550 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, marking the transition of one of GAIL’s largest renewable energy projects from planning to execution.
The EPC tender follows GAIL’s decision earlier this year to develop the project after signing agreements with TUSCO Ltd. in April 2026. The company had announced that the project would primarily meet the captive electricity requirements of its Pata Petrochemical Complex in Auraiya district, while also supporting electrification initiatives and compressed biogas (CBG) projects in Uttar Pradesh.
According to the tender, the selected contractor will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and five years of operation and maintenance (O&M) of the integrated solar and battery storage facility. Bids are scheduled to close in August 2026.
The EPC tender follows GAIL’s Board approval for the project in April 2026. At the time, the company approved an estimated project cost of approximately ₹3,295 crores, including interest during construction and other associated expenses. GAIL had also indicated that the project is expected to be completed within around 15 months from the award of the EPC contract.

Unlike conventional solar projects, the Jhansi development integrates a 275 MW/550 MWh Battery Energy Storage System, enabling surplus solar power generated during the day to be stored and supplied when generation declines or electricity demand peaks. The hybrid configuration is expected to improve grid stability, enhance power reliability, and maximize the utilization of renewable energy for GAIL’s industrial operations.
The project will be developed at TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi, an Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park promoted by THDC India Ltd. and Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA). The park forms part of the Government of India’s broader strategy to accelerate large-scale renewable energy deployment across the country.
The latest tender signals GAIL’s transition from project planning to execution. Earlier this month, the company had also invited bids to appoint a Project Management Consultant (PMC) for the project, indicating that implementation activities are gathering pace.

The Jhansi solar project aligns with GAIL’s strategy to diversify beyond natural gas and expand its renewable energy portfolio. As India’s energy sector increasingly adopts hybrid renewable projects with integrated storage, the combination of large-scale solar generation and battery storage is expected to play a growing role in ensuring reliable clean power for industrial consumers.
Once operational, the project is expected to significantly reduce GAIL’s dependence on conventional power sources while supporting the company’s long-term decarbonization goals and contributing to India’s clean energy transition.
