Ahmedabad is accelerating its transition to sustainable urban mobility with a major plan to deploy 1,960 new air-conditioned electric buses by 2027. Led by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), this initiative is part of the PM E-DRIVE scheme and will significantly strengthen both the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS).
The rollout is already underway. AMC has ordered 561 electric buses, including 311 for AMTS and 250 for BRTS, with deliveries expected to begin in 2026. Additionally, 1,000 buses have been secured under the central scheme, while tenders for 660 more are in progress and bids for another 300 buses are expected soon. Currently, Ahmedabad operates 204 electric buses alongside 400 CNG AC buses, moving steadily toward a cleaner fleet.

Over the next five years, the city aims to operate around 2,700 electric buses, with a long-term goal of complete public transport electrification by 2030. This transition is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 300 tonnes per day and nearly 1.1 lakh tonnes annually, while cutting diesel consumption and improving air quality.
Supporting infrastructure is also being expanded, including new charging stations at key depots and digital passenger information systems at bus stops. These upgrades will ensure efficient operations and improved commuter experience.
With better connectivity, lower emissions, and modern amenities, Ahmedabad’s electric bus expansion marks a major step toward a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable urban transport system.
