India’s premium motorcycle landscape is moving towards a new generation of buyers who are increasingly looking for stronger performance, advanced features and a more premium ownership experience. Within this shift, the 200cc category has become an important stepping stone for riders seeking greater capability without moving immediately into larger engine segments. Yamaha is looking to tap into this opportunity with the YZF-R2, developed to bring together performance, agility and everyday usability. The motorcycle is positioned to handle everything from spirited track riding and highway journeys to regular urban commuting, giving riders a broader range of ways to experience its supersport character.

The YZF-R2 will be available in three variants and five colour choices, giving buyers different levels of equipment and styling to choose from. The base variant comes in Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Gray, complemented by all-black front and rear wheels and a matte-finished seat for a restrained sporty appearance. The next variant adds Yamaha’s third-generation bi-directional Quick Shifter, claimed to be a segment-first feature, and is offered in Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue. Body-coloured alloy wheels, model-specific graphics and upgraded material finishes further distinguish this version from the base motorcycle.

At the top of the range is the YZF-R2M, finished exclusively in Metallic Gray and aimed at riders seeking a more premium supersport experience. Along with the Quick Shifter, the M variant receives a 3D embossed emblem, faux suede-finished seat, silver-finished swingarm and a shot-blasted muffler end cap inspired by the high-gloss treatment seen on Yamaha’s flagship R1. It also offers greater adjustment through adjustable front forks, rear shock absorbers, clutch lever and brake lever, allowing riders to tailor the motorcycle’s setup and riding feel to their preferences.

Technology and safety features remain common across the YZF-R2 range. The motorcycle gets 17-inch wheels, a Traction Control System, Assist & Slipper Clutch and Yamaha Ride Control with selectable Street, Sport and Rain riding modes. A 37 mm upside-down front fork setup is paired with dual-channel ABS, creating a package designed to provide greater control and confidence across different riding conditions. Together, these features give the YZF-R2 a technology-focused character that extends beyond its supersport-inspired styling.

Race-Inspired Styling

The YZF-R2 carries the visual character of Yamaha’s latest global R-Series models, combining sharp surfaces with a compact, aerodynamic profile. Its design is clearly shaped around the language of a supersport motorcycle, with tightly drawn bodywork and purposeful proportions that give the R2 a sense of movement even when it is standing still. The emphasis on clean lines, aerodynamic form and visual aggression reflects Yamaha’s intention to bring the character of its larger R-Series motorcycles into a more accessible segment.

At the front, a compact bi-functional LED headlight sits between dual LED position lights, creating a distinctive lighting signature that links the motorcycle directly to the R-Series family. The front fairing takes aerodynamic cues from the YZF-R9, with closely wrapped bodywork designed to manage airflow efficiently and contribute to stability at higher speeds. Moving towards the rear, the block-style LED taillight draws inspiration from the YZF-R1, while the MotoGP-influenced swingarm adds another layer of racing character. Together, these elements give the YZF-R2 a strong visual connection with Yamaha’s performance-focused motorcycle heritage.

All-New Platform Engineered for Agility

The YZF-R2 is built around a completely new platform developed with a clear emphasis on reducing weight while maintaining the stability and control expected from a Yamaha R-Series motorcycle. At the heart of the chassis is a high-tensile steel tube diamond frame, engineered to balance structural rigidity with a low overall mass. The approach contributes to a kerb weight of 149 kg, which Yamaha positions as the lightest figure in the segment and an important advantage for riders seeking an agile and responsive motorcycle.

Yamaha has also drawn on the chassis philosophy of its legendary YZF-R6 while developing the R2’s geometry. The resulting setup is intended to provide predictable and intuitive handling across different riding environments and levels of experience. A four-point engine mounting arrangement, supplemented by an additional mounting point, helps limit unwanted movement between the engine and frame. This contributes to greater chassis stability and rider feedback, particularly when cornering, while supporting the responsive handling characteristics expected from the R-Series.

All-New 204cc Engine Built for Performance

The YZF-R2 gets its performance from an all-new 204cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke, DOHC, single-cylinder, four-valve engine with fuel injection. Developed to balance spirited performance with everyday usability, the engine delivers 26.5 PS of peak power and 19.1 Nm of maximum torque, giving the motorcycle strong acceleration while maintaining the responsive, high-revving character expected from an R-Series machine.

A key highlight of the new powertrain is its finger-follower rocker-arm valve train, which incorporates Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating technology derived from Yamaha’s flagship R1. By reducing friction and reciprocating mass within the valve train, the system helps lower component weight while supporting efficiency and durability. The result is an engine designed to respond quickly to throttle inputs and build its performance progressively as the revs rise, reinforcing the sporting character of the YZF-R2.

Lightweight Chassis and Confidence-Inspiring Suspension

Keeping weight under control is central to the YZF-R2’s handling philosophy. Its steel frame weighs 14 kg and has been engineered to provide the necessary rigidity without adding unnecessary mass. This balance helps the motorcycle respond more readily to rider inputs, while supporting stable cornering and a more confident feel through bends.

The chassis is paired with 37 mm upside-down (USD) front forks and a rear monoshock, creating a suspension package designed to cope with a wide range of road conditions. The setup is intended to absorb surface imperfections while maintaining composure and control, whether the motorcycle is navigating everyday urban roads or being pushed through more spirited weekend rides. The combination of lightweight construction and carefully tuned suspension gives the YZF-R2 an agile character without compromising ride comfort.

Smart Connectivity & Riding modes

The YZF-R2 is equipped with a host of advanced technologies designed to enhance convenience, connectivity, and rider engagement. A vibrant 5-inch full-colour TFT display provides clear access to essential ride and navigation information, while the Smart Key System (available on the M variant) offers seamless keyless operation for added convenience. The motorcycle also features three riding modes thanks to Yamaha Ride Control (YRC). YRC offers the riders to choose from Street, Sport and Rain modes allowing riders to tailor the motorcycle’s performance to suit different road conditions and riding preferences.

Commenting on the launch, Mr. Hajime Aota, Chairman, Yamaha Motor India Group, said: “The launch of the YZF-R2 marks a significant milestone in Yamaha’s long-term growth strategy. The YZF-R2 is not an entry into a new segment; it is a motorcycle created for riders who are committed to the spirit of Yamaha R-series. Combining the authentic R-series DNA with lightweight performance and excellent fuel efficiency, it offers an exciting and accessible gateway to our supersport world. Inspired by the global R-Series flagship motorcycles and built on an all-new platform, the YZF-R2 reflects our confidence in India’s engineering expertise and its growing role in Yamaha’s global product strategy.”

“We are deeply grateful to our R-series customers in India for their unwavering trust and passion, which have helped make the R-series one of Yamaha’s most iconic motorcycle families in the country. Today, with over one million R-series motorcycles on Indian roads, this enduring relationship continues to inspire us to push the boundaries of innovation and performance. We are confident the YZF-R2 will build on this legacy, set a new benchmark in its segment, and inspire the next generation of Yamaha riders.”
