NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has expanded the functional safety capabilities of its NORDAC ON decentralized frequency inverter, strengthening its suitability for use in modern automation environments. The latest upgrade adds new integrated safety functions that enable safer control and monitoring of drive systems in automated production.
As manufacturing facilities continue to adopt higher levels of automation, drive electronics with integrated safety functions play an increasingly important role in ensuring the safe operation of motion sequences. With this enhancement, NORD continues to extend the functional safety features available across its drive technology portfolio.
Safe Control of Speeds
The upgraded NORDAC ON now incorporates the safe motion functions Safety Limited Speed (SLS), Safe Maximum Speed (SMS) and Safe Speed Monitor (SSM), in addition to the existing Safe Torque Off (STO) and Safe Stop 1 (SS1) functions.
While STO and SS1 provide safe standstill capabilities, the newly integrated functions enable fail-safe control and monitoring of drive speeds, offering greater flexibility for applications requiring controlled rotary movement.
The future variant of the decentralized frequency inverter can be integrated into fail-safe applications within existing Industrial Ethernet networks via PROFIsafe or FailSafe over EtherCAT (FSoE). During commissioning, users can simply parameterize the required Industrial Ethernet protocol. Stand-alone operation is also supported.
The NORDAC ON’s safe digital inputs and outputs allow fail-safe peripheral components and functions to be incorporated into the system. This enables the connection of devices such as emergency stop buttons, safety door switches and photoelectric sensors. In addition, two safe one-channel digital inputs can be combined into a single safe two-channel input, while two safe outputs can be configured as one safe two-channel output.

Made for Modern Production Environments
Designed for decentralized installation, the NORDAC ON features a compact design and full plug-in capability. Its plug-and-play functionality helps reduce wiring effort while providing a maintenance-friendly and cost-effective solution for modern production environments.
The frequency inverter also features an onboard PLC for both PLC and drive-related functions. It can process data from connected sensors and actuators, initiate control sequences, and communicate drive and application data to the control centre, networked components or cloud storage.
The NORDAC ON decentralized frequency inverter is available in power ratings ranging from 0.37 kW to 3.7 kW, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial automation applications.
