Agratas, the Tata Group’s global battery business, has crossed a major construction milestone at its Sanand battery manufacturing facility in Gujarat, bringing the project a step closer to commercial production in 2027. According to recent industry and company reports, the steel framework of the main manufacturing building has now been completed, marking a significant phase in the development of one of India’s largest advanced battery cell facilities.
The Sanand project is designed to deliver 20 GWh of annual battery cell capacity in its first phase, supporting both electric vehicle and energy storage applications. Once operational, the facility is expected to strengthen India’s domestic battery supply chain, reduce dependence on imports, and support the country’s clean mobility ambitions.
The completed steel structure reportedly spans 700 metres in length, 150 metres in width, and rises to 34 metres, covering a built-up area of nearly 105,000 square metres. More than 24,000 tonnes of steel have been used in the main structure, while work on associated buildings and internal systems is progressing in parallel. At peak construction, over 2,500 skilled workers were deployed on site.
This project is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities across production, engineering, maintenance, quality assurance, and technical operations. With battery demand rising across EV and storage sectors, the Sanand facility is poised to become a strategic pillar in India’s rapidly expanding energy transition ecosystem.
