Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has secured a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth over ₹21,000 crores (excluding GST) for the Meja Supercritical Thermal Power Project (STPP) Stage-II in Uttar Pradesh, marking one of the company’s largest project wins in recent years.
According to the company’s disclosure to stock exchanges, BHEL has received a Notification of Award (NOA) from Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited (MUNPL) for the EPC package of the 3×800 MW project. MUNPL is a joint venture between NTPC Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL).
The scope of the contract includes design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning activities associated with the project. The upcoming thermal power facility will be located in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh and is expected to add 2,400 MW of generation capacity upon completion.

The order was awarded through an international competitive bidding process. BHEL stated that the project is scheduled to be completed within 70 months from the date of the award notification.
The contract is expected to further strengthen BHEL’s order book and reinforce its position in India’s power infrastructure sector. The development comes amid continued investments in generation capacity expansion to support rising electricity demand across the country.
Industry observers note that large-scale supercritical thermal projects continue to play a significant role in ensuring reliable power supply while supporting grid stability. The Meja Stage-II project is expected to contribute to Uttar Pradesh’s long-term energy requirements and enhance generation capacity in the region.
BHEL clarified that the contract does not constitute a related-party transaction. The company will serve as the executing agency for the project, while MUNPL will act as the project owner.
