Honeywell has announced that its artificial intelligence-powered Battery Manufacturing Excellence Platform (Battery MXP) will be integrated into the battery research laboratory at the Alabama Mobility and Power Center (AMP Center) at the University of Alabama. The advanced battery manufacturing automation platform is designed to enhance production efficiency by improving cell yields and accelerating facility start-up timelines for manufacturers operating at any scale. The deployment will also enable the research lab to support workforce development by providing hands-on training for the next generation of engineers and battery industry professionals across the United States.

The AMP Center serves as a leading research and development hub focused on advancing modern mobility and power technologies, including electric vehicle infrastructure, charging systems and energy delivery solutions. Through the integration of Honeywell’s Battery MXP, the center will provide manufacturers with a comprehensive automation platform that supports the scaling of high-quality, cost-effective battery production to meet the growing demands of electrification and energy storage markets.

“The AMP Center was created to connect industry, academia, and state initiatives around the future of mobility and power,” said Mike Oatridge, Executive Director of the Alabama Mobility and Power Center. “The deployment of Battery MXP supports Alabama’s automotive industry while advancing solutions for data center growth, grid stability, and the state’s long-term electrification and economic development goals.”

“The rapid evolution of battery technology calls for a skilled workforce and advanced production capabilities at large scale, including comprehensive automation platforms powered by AI,” said Russ Ford, President of Honeywell Process Automation Solutions. “AMP’s use of Battery MXP is poised to be a catalyst to empower the next generation of engineers in this important industry as it continues to grow.”

At the AMP Center, Honeywell is collaborating with FOM Technologies to enhance the electrode production process within the Battery MXP platform. As electrode manufacturing is typically one of the most complex and critical stages in battery production, this partnership aims to streamline and optimize the process. By combining their expertise, the three organizations will deliver an integrated, end-to-end automation solution designed to help OEMs manufacture safer, high-quality batteries for end users.

The AMP Center battery research lab is expected to open in Q2 2026 and will be one of the first pilot battery production sites available to external organizations. As part of its initiative to boost workforce training and development, AMP will provide hands-on experience to students and engineers with Honeywell’s comprehensive automation technologies, enabling them to learn the skills needed for a career in advanced manufacturing.
